PAUL BROWN BIOGRAPHY

Paul Brown It was 1967, I was 10 years old and I got my first guitar, then started taking piano lessons and soon formed a school band that practised in each other’s houses.

By the time I was 13 I had now progressed to playing the drums and began gigging, with some friends, in church halls and private parties around Gloucester until eventually my band mates realised that I played better bass than the bassist and his drumming was superior to mine, so we swapped instruments!

Over a period of time and through several name changes we eventually became Climate and from then on progressed to playing local pubs and clubs until the late 70’s when we had branched out, touring the UK playing holiday camps and nightclubs as well as spending 6 months touring Germany.

In 1981 I joined forces with some Stroud-based musicians to write and perform our own material under the name Spynal Chordz. We played the local circuits and this time recorded our songs which we then managed to perform at select London venues to considerable interest from record companies. This interest failed to develop into action however and I returned to Gloucester and the local band circuit before joining Understanding Jane during 1989.

This band wrote, recorded and performed it’s own material and for four years we toured and played anywhere and everywhere until 1994 when, following a name change to Madworld, we stopped playing live and devoted the whole year to recording our songs and releasing a home-grown CD. Once again we were thwarted in our attempts to gain broader recognition and I again returned to the local circuit.

I am married to Carol who is a singer and as she was ‘between bands’ we decided to do something together, firstly by buying a keyboard and some recording equipment and then with me polishing up my guitar playing before embarking on some duo gigs as well as temporarily becoming involved in a hard-working Robbie Williams tribute act.

The local band scene also retained my services with stints in Wish and Shish Gecko, with Wish eventually changing into The Shy Teds who have now become a local institution!

It was during a charity event in 1999 that I met Jon who was guesting with the Teds following which Jon and Alan asked me to join The Fabulous Dough Boys.

My current days are spent making a wide range of music with Carol and some of my closest friends ... pretty good, eh?
